In tandem with the FAA's Light-Sport Aircraft rules are the Sport Pilot rules. The FAA Sport Pilot certificate allows you to learn to fly light-sport aircraft in half the time and expense required to achieve the Private Pilot certificate! However, because there are fewer training requirements there are also more restrictions on Sport Pilots. For example, as a Sport Pilot you won't be able to fly as pilot in command at night or at an altitude above 10,000 feet (almost two miles above sea level) or 2000 feet above ground level (whichever is greater). Since all of the training required for a Sport Pilot certificate also applies toward more advanced ratings, many sport pilots go on to fly larger, faster, and more complex aircraft. (To see an overview of the the whole range of pilot certificates, go to this article.) If you want to go ahead and get a more advanced pilot certificate or rating, you can do that in the SportCruiser too!
For training curricula, VSA recommends Gleim's Sport Pilot Kit, an excellent structured training program that contains everything you need (except airplane and instructor!). Order yours straight from Gleim and have it delivered to your home to begin your journey! Contact VSA for more information about scheduling sport pilot flight instruction with a Certified Flight Instructor (CFI) in our SportCruiser / PiperSport LSA aircraft!
