Instructor Qualifications
ALL flight instructors are tested and certified by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to meet high standards of knowledge and experience. There are two basic levels of instructor: the Sport Pilot Certified Flight Instructor, and the Certified Flight Instructor (can also be Certified for teaching flight by instruments). Sport Pilot Instructors must have at least 150 flight hours and may only teach candidates for the Sport Pilot Certificate. The Certified Flight Instructor, or "CFI", is required to have 250 hours and may teach candidates for the Sport Pilot, Recreational Pilot, Private Pilot, or Commercial Pilot certificates. Earning either instructor certificate requires that a pilot pass two written exams, an oral exam, and a flight exam; all given by the FAA.
